3 Local Myths Believed By Trinidad & Tobago Business Owners

First, however, it is important to address some local i.e. Trinidad and Tobago “internet myths” that can cause a mental block to your success on the web. These beliefs may not be peculiar to this country alone but this is our model it may be the same in other cultures. They myths are:

1.Myth: The Internet Puts A Business Owner In Danger: Many T&T business people think that if they build a web site they must reveal detail information which bandits and criminals will use to get at them.

Facebook contradicts that theory. If that was the case it would be dangerous to place ads in the newspapers or television with a phone numbers and addresses.

2.Myth: The Only Reason To Build a Web site Is To Sell: Now this is a big one and you have to understand and make a real shift in your thinking here. NOBODY WILL VISIT YOUR SITE TO BUY ANYTHING.

Please reread that and remember it because if you can understand that your site will take a remarkable shift in the right direction. This is the nature of the internet.

Unless you sell an instantly downloadable product, any attempt to sell your visitors is a futile waste of your energy and time. Reread it again, it is that important.

3.Myth: All My Business Comes Locally, I Don’t Need A Site: Many business people believe that because they operate in a densely populated area that traditionally attracted all their customers they do not need a website. Sounds like a reasonable argument.

This belief is based on myth #2 above; if you can’t sell them; why would you want them? The irony is that these merchants also do not have a database of their customers, or a totally free way to communicate with them.

“Thank you” at the point of purchase is the extent of their customer service. This is even more impactful for businesses in rural areas.
